Labral tears are another significant issue in hip preservation. The labrum is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the acetabulum, providing stability and cushioning to the hip joint. Tears can result from trauma, repetitive motion, or structural abnormalities such as FAI or dysplasia. Labral tears cause pain, clicking, and a sense of instability in the hip. Arthroscopic surgery is the preferred treatment, involving the repair or removal of the torn labrum. Repairing the labrum helps restore the joint’s normal function and reduces the risk of further degeneration.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of cartilage, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Early-stage OA can often be managed with non-surgical interventions such as physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and intra-articular injections. Physical therapy focuses on strengthening the muscles around the hip, improving flexibility, and reducing joint stress. Lifestyle modifications, including weight management and low-impact exercise, help alleviate symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Intra-articular injections, such as corticosteroids or hyaluronic acid, provide temporary relief from pain and inflammation.

When conservative measures fail, surgical options are considered. Hip arthroscopy, a minimally invasive procedure, is frequently used to address early OA. It allows surgeons to clean out debris, remove loose bodies, and repair damaged cartilage. For patients with more advanced OA but who are not yet candidates for total hip replacement, joint preservation techniques such as osteochondral allograft transplantation and autologous chondrocyte implantation may be employed. These procedures aim to restore damaged cartilage and improve joint function hip preservation

Emerging technologies and research are continually advancing the field of hip preservation. Biologics, such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell therapy, are being investigated for their potential to promote healing and regeneration of damaged tissues. PRP involves concentrating the patient’s own blood platelets and injecting them into the affected joint to stimulate healing. Stem cell therapy uses mesenchymal stem cells, which have the ability to differentiate into various cell types, including cartilage cells, to repair and regenerate damaged tissues.
